What you finance
Amount financed = price + sales tax + fees + financed gear − down payment − trade-in value
Monthly payment = amount financed × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), where r = APR ÷ 12 and n = years × 12
The calculator assumes sales tax on the price minus your trade-in and does not tax financed gear. States treat trade-ins and accessories differently, so check your state's rule.
Example
A $15,000 motorcycle with $1,500 down (10%), 6% sales tax ($900) and $400 in fees means financing $14,800. At 9% for 5 years the payment is $307.22 a month and you pay $3,633.48 in interest.
Over 3 years the payment is $470.64 and interest falls to $2,142.87. Over 7 years the payment drops to $238.12 but interest rises to $5,201.83. Add $1,800 a year for insurance and maintenance and the 5-year loan costs about $457.22 a month. With nothing down and $1,200 of gear rolled in, you would finance $17,500 (more than the bike's price) and pay $363.27 a month.
Term length, gear and depreciation
Motorcycles lose value quickly, especially in the first two years. Rolling tax, fees and gear into the loan, or stretching it to 6 or 7 years, makes it likely you will owe more than the bike is worth if you need to sell it or it is totaled. A shorter term, a larger down payment or paying cash for gear keeps you ahead of depreciation.
Frequently asked questions
How long can you finance a motorcycle?
Most motorcycle loans run 2 to 7 years (24 to 84 months). Longer terms lower the payment but add interest and raise the risk of owing more than the bike is worth.
How much should I put down on a motorcycle?
Many buyers put 10% to 20% down. Some lenders allow zero down, but with nothing down and fees or gear rolled in you start out owing more than the motorcycle’s price.
Should I finance my helmet and riding gear?
You can add gear and accessories to the loan, but you pay interest on them for the whole term. Enter the amount in the gear field to see how much it adds to the payment.
Does the payment include insurance?
The monthly payment covers the loan only. Lenders usually require full coverage on a financed bike; enter your yearly insurance and maintenance to see a separate monthly cost-of-ownership figure.
