What you finance
Amount financed = price + sales tax + fees − down payment − trade-in value
Monthly payment = amount financed × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), where r = APR ÷ 12 and n = years × 12
First-year cost per night = (12 monthly payments + yearly insurance, storage & upkeep) ÷ nights used
The calculator assumes sales tax on the price minus your trade-in. States tax motorhomes and towable trailers differently, so check your state's rule.
Example
An $80,000 RV with $12,000 down (15%), 6% sales tax ($4,800) and $800 in fees means financing $73,600. At 8% for 15 years the payment is $703.36 a month and you pay $53,004.72 in interest.
The same loan over 10 years costs $892.97 a month and $33,556.52 in interest. Over 20 years the payment drops to $615.62 and interest climbs to $74,148.70. Add $5,000 a year for insurance, storage and maintenance and the 15-year RV costs about $1,120.03 a month; used 40 nights a year, that is about $336.01 a night in the first year.
Long terms and depreciation
RV loans for larger amounts often run 15 or even 20 years to keep the payment low. RVs lose value quickly, especially in the first few years, so on a long loan you can owe more than the RV would sell for well into the term. A bigger down payment or a shorter term protects you if your plans change and you need to sell.
Frequently asked questions
How long can you finance an RV?
Commonly 5 to 10 years for smaller loans and up to 15 or 20 years for larger ones. Lenders set the maximum term by loan amount, the RV’s age and your credit.
How much down payment do I need for an RV?
Most lenders ask for 10% to 20% down. More down can get a better rate and lowers the risk of owing more than the RV is worth.
Does the payment include insurance and storage?
The monthly payment covers the loan only. Enter your yearly insurance, storage, maintenance and campground memberships to see a separate monthly cost-of-ownership figure.
How do I work out the cost per night of owning an RV?
Enter the nights you expect to use it each year. The calculator adds the first year’s loan payments to your yearly ownership costs and divides by those nights, which you can compare with renting an RV or staying in hotels. Fuel and campsite fees are not included.
